For the web award that keeps on giving, there’s no better choice than the Favourite Website Awards, launched in May 2000. Every day since then, the site has selected a “Site of the Day”a site that is worth taking five minutes (or more) out of your busy day to explore. It may be structured around a particular musician or film, or it may be something a little stranger, like November 27′s Scandinavian site Rumpetroll, where users take on the role of a tadpole and can interact with people from around the world. FWA’s international focus ensures that there will always be something interesting on hand.At the end of the month, a “Site of the Month” is selected from all of the sites of the day for that particular month. From this narrowed-down pool, a “Site of the Year” is selected, marking the most interesting site of the entire year. Or notwith archives stretching back to the beginning of the year, there’s still plenty to look at even if your favorite isn’t selected for one of the higher prizes.FWA has received its share of acclaim as well. It was created by a UK Web Design agency known as “treecity,” which was shortlisted for the Best Web Design Agency, UK in the 2000 Yell UK Web Awards. More recently, in 2007 the Chicago Tribune named FWA the best web award in the world in its first World Wide Web Awards Award. Not only did this cement FWA’s reputation as a site to watch, but it illustrated that users from all around the world can find something interesting at the websitewhether they put a “u” in “favourite” or not. Of course, FWA avoids this deviation by locating their site at the simple domain www.thefwa.com.The final Site of the Year is chosen by a panel of industry leaders through two rounds of judging. There’s also a People’s Choice Award where FWA visitors are given the opportunity to cast one vote for their favorite site of the year. For those interested in getting their own site to the top of the ranks, FWA offers a series of books published by TASCHEN. Guidelines for Online Success (2008) by FWA founder Rob Ford and co-author Julius Wiedemann goes through chapters based around every aspect of web success, from interface and design to content/content management. The Internet Case Study Book (2010) by the same authors digs deeper into the successes of more than 80 different sites.Everyone’s sure to learn something at the FWA, so why wait? Check them out now.
